Hiroshi Sugimoto

August 23, 2010

In 1978 photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto began exposing film to the focused light of a movie projector, leaving his camera’s shutter wide for the duration of a movie.  The resulting series Theaters captures not only the luminescent screens and pristine architectural details of America’s old movie palaces but also documents, in the absence of form, the passing of time and events inside of them.
