Hiroshi Sugimoto | Liminal Spaces

September 7, 2010

This week E. examines works which conceptualize Liminal Spaces, or the psychological, metaphysical or subjective states of consciousness between two different existential planes.  Works by contemporary artists Hiroshi Sugimoto, Gonzalo Lebrija, Yayoi Kusama and Marina Abramovic, symbolize the three stages of liminal spaces, the Pre-Liminal Rites of Separation, Liminal Rites of Transition and Post Liminal Rites of Incorporation.

Hiroshi Sugimoto’s large scale, ‘time exposed’ photographs depict, as Victor Turner describes, ‘a place that is not a place and a time that is not a time’ encapsulating the passing of events in time and creating an imprint of a unstable place in a moment that no longer exists.
