Mechanics of the Sublime

May 19, 2011

Contemporary artists featured this week employ technologies with varying levels of sophistication to induce and uncover the sublime.  Susan Hiller’s use of crackly vintage sound recordings, Trevor Paglen’s photographs of contemporary military surveillance planes in flight, Leo Villareal’s LED’s and the simple software that choreographs his immersive light installations, and Anish Kapoor’s machinery that configures and contours his immaterial art objects, each extend beyond the mechanisms of the technology they employ to produce a sensation beyond ordinary perception. The power of these works lies in what the eyes cannot see and what the hands cannot touch.
