Lorna Simpson | Momentum

June 2, 2011

Lorna Simpson’s Momentum explores the tenuous relationship between past events and memory.  Gilded dancers reenact the fragmented childhood memory of the artist’s debut ballet performance at Lincoln Center.  The video’s narrative structure is oddly disjointed, the performers’ pirouetting interrupted by long passages of inactivity and childish fidgeting, mirroring Simpson’s present day memory of an event long past.
