Louise Bourgeois | Fabric Drawings

June 2, 2011

Assemblages of her husband’s handkerchiefs, stained tablecloths, tattered sheets and worn dresses from all phases of life comprise Louise Bourgeois’s fabric “drawings”.  Embedded in the textiles from the artist’s wardrobe and linen closets are memories spun into fabric webs.

“Clothing is…an exercise of memory.  It makes me explore the past…like little signposts in the search for the past.”

“I always had the fear of being separated and abandoned.

The sewing is my attempt to keep things together and make things whole.”
