Vik Muniz | Pictures of Garbage

June 20, 2011

Vik Muniz regularly presents iconic images fabricated of unexpected materials and the artist’s series Pictures of Garbage is no exception.  The body of work was created during the filming of Muniz’s documentary Wasteland that tracks his collaboration with the garbage pickers of Jardim Gramacho, a 321-acre open-air dump just outside of Rio.  The informal workforce scavenges a significant percentage of Brazil’s refuse and Muniz paid the workers for their time and materials to create monumental classical portraits fabricated from trash.
