Chun Kwang Young

August 23, 2011

The grandiose scale of Kwang-Young Chun’s intricate free-standing paper sculptures exude a totem-like presence.  Thousands of densely packed Styrofoam tetrahedrons, wrapped in handmade mulberry paper (hanji) are inscribed with Korean characters and colonize monumental crystallized pods.  His meticulous and highly meditative handicraft is inspired by a childhood memory of his uncle’s pharmacy, where small medicinal herb parcels were wrapped with paper and hung in tight clusters from the ceiling.
