David Rickard | Time + Trace | Exhaust

September 21, 2011

In Exhaust artist David Rickard carefully collected each of his exhalations over a 24 hour period in large silver foil balloons.  The resulting sculptural monolith of 98 balloons pays homage to his grueling process and prompts visitors to become acutely conscious of their own breath.  In Exhaust the artist established a set of parameters to govern the formation of the work, but acknowledged the large role of chance in informing the outcome and appearance of the work.

“The only time that I have real control of the works is while developing the concepts that will guide the processes and generate them.”
