January 8, 2012

Robert Smithson’s geological abstractions feature groupings of mirrors partially buried in earth or concealed behind vegetation.  At first, they are sightless eyes mirroring the earth, flora and sky, but then, seem to form a second pictorial dimension to the landscape, creating conjoined opposites of foreground and background.
