David LaChapelle | Earth Laughs In Flowers

February 23, 2012

David LaChapelle’s visually luscious wilting floral arrangements are littered with contemporary kitsch adornments.  Cell phones, cigarette butts, Starbuck’s cups, Barbie dolls and balloons rest beside more traditional vanitas symbols like rotting fruit, decaying flowers and skulls.  His memento mori explores themes of contemporary vanity, the transience of candied fads and the lurking presence of decay.
