Christian Marclay | The Clock

February 28, 2012

Christian Marclay’s The Clock radically samples classic film scenes from the last century that depict the passage of time.  Characters from silent films to present day features, check, wind or synchronize a panoply of timepieces, they argue about what time it is, and shriek that time is running out.  The Clock serves as a functioning timepiece once synchronized to local time and accurately parses real time.  The result is an intensely rhythmic 24-hour timepiece ticks off the minutes in an exhilarating sweep of film fragments, conveying plot, emotion and the oppressive weight of time.
