Urs Fischer | Illuminations

February 28, 2012

Molten wax runs in rivulets from a flickering full-scale replica of Giovanni Bologna’s 16th-century sculpture, ‘The Rape of the Sabine Women’.  Witnessing the classic sculpture is a realistic, life-size figure of a contemporary Everyman.  All three of Urs Fisher’s life-size candle-sculptures are lit, and gradually self-destruct, devolving into molten amorphous masses.  Fisher’s sculptures mark the passing of time with operatic destructiveness and drip with history and doom.
