Hans Josephsohn | “Self-Enclosed Figures”

March 13, 2012

Hans Josephsohn’s reluctant forms are benignly inert, shy beasts.  Formed in plaster then cast in bronze, the unrefined figures have insistent corporality and continuous mass.  Their mottled surfaces, roughly hewn by trowel strokes, sublimely transport us back through the history of sculpture.  These serenely disassociated forms emanate a subdued emotional tenor and seem to hover within their own materiality.
